With more and more businesses seeing social media as essential in growing their business, social media marketing is definitely a trend that won't go away soon. However, it's crucial to avoid jumping into the bandwagon – it's important that you set up an effective plan first that will help you maximize the results and take advantage of your resources. If you are a newbie entrepreneur planning to start your campaign, here are some pointers to take into consideration:

Don't be too self-serving.

Your target audience dislikes nothing more than dealing with businesses overselling their products and services. Since customer conversion is surely one of your target goals, engaging your audience without being too self-serving can be a real challenge. There's nothing wrong with posting and sharing promotional posts about your new items or sales promos every now and then, but these should be less frequent. What you should aim instead is to engage the attention of your audience without having to sell your business to them.

Craft your content and posts to your audience.

User engagement is usually the main priority in every campaign, so it's just fitting to craft content that will be suitable and interesting to your target audience. Here are some examples:

• Motivational: Inspirational words that might brighten their day yet still be related to your niche somehow

• Tips: Product buying guide, as well as tips on how to get the most out of the products or services they availed from you

• Contests: Organize contests that may increase user engagement and participation, increasing awareness about your brand in the process. This can be in the form of Facebook likes and shares, as well as Twitter retweets. 

• Trends: Search for the latest trends or topics that your audience is interested in. Spend time crafting your content based on the market's interests and latest trends in the industry.

Invest in visual content marketing.

In this day and age where we are bombarded with information overload from numerous sources every time, it is a real challenge to catch and sustain the attention of your audience. One way to do this is through visual content, meaning photos, videos, infographics, and the likes. These types of content usually get traction because 1) they are visually creative, 2) less text makes it easy for the reader to grasp and understand the message, and 3) they are effective in sending the message across in no time. Invest time in brainstorming with the team in order to craft visually appealing content that are highly shareable, up-to-date, and interesting to your market.


This should be the main vision of any business. It is basically a product development cycle wherein the business adopts a combination of hypothesis-driven experimentation, iterative product or service releases, and validated learning. While this is primarily a lean business start-up approach, you can use it in crafting your social media marketing campaign. You start first with an idea that you slowly build for market experimentation and testing. Next step is to measure or assess the performance, and last is to learn from the results as you use them in improving your next campaigns. Any marketing campaign should be ideally like this – focus on testing and measuring small ideas and use the insights you learned in the process in planning your next marketing campaign.
