Tips to Help You Build and Grow a Small Business Brand

A brand is identified as "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's product distinct from those of other sellers." It got it's name from the old custom of branding cows with iron, to know which cow belongs to which owner. Today, brands are less painful, but they still serve a similar purpose: to recognize the company by only looking at it's brand. If you're trying to make a brand for your company, here are some tips and tricks to help you along the way.

Be yourself

Stand for something you believe in and be innovative and bold while doing so. Never try to mimic another big chain brand. If you make this mistake, you will instantly be perceived as a plagiarist and a cheaper copy of the already existent brand. If you stand for something yours, something new, you will attract customers that feel the same way. Those customers will stay with you longer and feel right at home with your products. Why? Because they'll feel that your brand says something about themselves, as if they're making a statement by choosing your product.

Colours are important

Different colours make people feel differently. You can produce a state of calmness, anxiety, relief, even happiness with the right colour. Always be aware of what message you're trying to put out there. When choosing the right colour-scheme for your logo, website or business cards, think about what industry you're in. If your company is associated with recycling, eco-friendly and modern way of thinking: go with green. If your product is associated with food, colours like yellow and red are highly recommended, while blue should be avoided. Blue, in a darker shade however is the right choice if your company is highly professional and serious.

Hire a designer

You might assume that hiring a designer is something for the largest-scale business brands, but it's not necessarily so. You might think that you're losing money here, but in the long run, you'll only be making money. If you're really on a tight budget, you can invest in some freelance and contractor designers, which can produce as high as quality for you as for a large company, for a fraction of their cost. One more idea is to arrange a try-out, where you offer a fixed sum to the designer that brings the best product.

Reputation is the key

The days when corporations can control their image are long gone. People talk among themselves and in the 21st century, social media has made that ever easier. Things said about your brand on yelp, facebook, twitter and other media outlets are very important, so positive feedback must be very important to you.

Do you want to be a challenger brand?

Do you want to be a rock or a river? If the metaphor is lost on you, consider this: do you want to stay the same forever or keep on going, changing as opportunities and different times arise, being forever young? Be consistent and self-confidant but still flexible and innovative. The 'challenge' in 'challenger brand' stands for challenging you customers and pushing the way they feel about your brand.

I hope to have helped you out with some of these basic, but necessary tips. Becoming a well known brand is not an easy task, but perseverance, creativity and innovation are the right roads to it. Stay on those roads, and eventually you'll get there.
